The Three Different Categories of Restaurant Barware
Whether you own a hotel, a restaurant, or a pub, alcohol sales will be a vital factor in the success of your business. Of course if you sell alcohol, that probably means you’re going to have a bar. This of course means that at some point in time you are going to have to buy new barware.
The varieties bar equipment your bartenders are going to need to do their jobs can be broken down into three categories. The first category, hardware which includes all things mechanical, from your soda gun to your beer tap system to your ice machine. Glassware is obviously the second category. Without glassware it would be impossible to serve beverages at all. Even though it probably doesn’t seem like it, the most important category may be the third one. This category is barware.
Barware is a generic term used to describe all the vital tools a bartender needs in order to mix and make cocktails. This category includes everything cork screws to cocktail shakers to zesting tools to bottle openers The problem is that when purchase only the cheapest barware for your restaurant, you are in danger of serving inferior drinks regardless of how gifted your bartenders are or how top shelf the quality of your alcohol is. That being said, here’s a few rules you should follow when purchasing accessories for your bar.
It’s best to use an insulated cocktail shaker because the colder your cocktails are when you serve them, the better they will be. Make sure you buy a hawthorn strainer if you opt for a Boston shaker. A zester is a must for cutting citrus twists for garnish, but the best option is a simple channel or decorating knife. Buy the best quality wine opener you can. Nothing is more unappealing than picking out bits of cork from your wine. If you can find a wall-mounted bottle opener, get it. You’re probably going to misplace the hand-held kind. And because portion control is everything, be sure you have a few double jiggers or spirit measures around.
