BT Expresses Concern over Digital Britain Recommendation
BT has expressed its concern over the government’s decision of introducing fibre optic broadband service throughout the UK with a mere 50p monthly broadband tax. The company has said that it is doubtful as to whether the project’s progress can be ensured with the proposed fund.
The company’s Director of strategy and portfolio, Olivia Garfield, while talking at the Headquarters in London expressed her doubt at the government’s recommendation of a monthly 50p broadband tax to be sufficient to implement fibre optic coverage across the UK. She said that a more practical target setting is required on the government’s part. She also revealed that according to their estimates, in order to cover the whole country with high speed broadband, the tax would need to be somewhere close to 80p a month.
During the meeting Garfield also disclosed that BT had nothing to do with the tax declaration .She revealed that BT was informed of the proposed broadband tax just twenty minutes before the release of the Digital Britain report.
BT is now seeking help from Ofcom to arrange for the complete facts regarding the proposed distribution of the Next Generation Fund to companies like BT and Virgin Media. BT also feels that it is the lack of proper communication that is making the situation so confusing for everyone – for up-to-date and accurate information on your ISP click compare broadband – The Parliament has taken the issue quite seriously and is planning an investigation to assess the viability of the Next Generation Fund and to examine other proposals of the Digital Britain Report.
