Lithuanian Holiday
Lithuania has been known since well before it was called by that name as a place of contradictions. Almost directly adjacent to Poland, Belarus and Latvia one might be inclined to think of it as yet another Russian bloc nation. But that couldn’t be further from the truth. The nation’s single major seaport, Klaipeda, was once a major shipping destination for traders from Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Germany and Finland. And each left a little piece of itself behind. On a Lithuanian Tour one will encounter such diverse religions as Roman Catholic, Russian Orthodox, Baptist, Islam and Judaism; astonishing diversity for such a small nation.
However, the main religions of the Lithuania are Christian based, as one might surmise from the Hill of Three Crosses. That might be a bit of a misnomer however, as there were at last count at least fifteen-thousand crosses in the area. True to the resiliency of the Lithuanian people, the crosses were almost completely destroyed several times (most recently by the Russians in 1942) but seem to reappear each time. It’s a lesson that could stand to be learned by any nation, and one which you yourself may come away with on your Lithuanian holiday.
