Spam. Those annoying, time-consuming emails that clog your Inbox and ruin your day. You wonder: How did it ever get so bad? While it’s not possible to completely eliminate spam, there are quite a few things you CAN do about the problem to reduce your burden.

Spam is defined as an unsolicited email trying to get you to buy something. In addition, it’s email that tries to get you to give up something: your credit card number, social security number, login ID, etc., by pretending to be a legitimate email. Here are some tips for stopping the current spam you’re getting, and avoiding getting on new spam lists.

1. Maintain two email addresses: a Personal Email Address (that you give to family, friends and business associates), and a Safe Email Address (one you use whenever you’re ordering something online, signing up for an email newsletter, or creating a profile on a website).

For instance, I use a Hotmail account for my Safe Email Address. If a spammer were to get a hold of that address, fine. All the spam will go into my Hotmail account, which I only look at once a week. Hotmail has a great anti-spam filter built in, so it’s easy to see what’s spam and what’s not. This practice leaves my personal email account relatively spam-free (maybe I get two spam emails a day to my personal account). Some free email services include Hotmail, Yahoo and GMail (Google’s new email service).

2. Use your Safe Email Address to send emails to companies who might be harvesting email addresses from incoming emails. For example, say you want to write to a company to ask them about their products. Some companies will harvest your email address from the email you send to them, and put you on their mailing list. By using your Safe Email Address, you can avoid seeing messages from these companies come to your personal email address.

3. Stop giving your email address to everyone who wants it. Does your local bank really need your email address? Does your grocery store need it? Just because someone asks for it doesn’t mean you have to give it to them. If it’s a non-local company, or you are signing up for a mailing list, then they probably do need it. But it’s okay to leave the email address blank when filling out forms. Always ask yourself, Do I want to be contacted by this company via email? (Speaking of mailing lists, make sure the companies you subscribe to have a public, posted Privacy Statement on their website.)

4. Do not put your Personal Email Address on your website. Instead, use a form so that your email address is hidden. However, some spammers use special software that looks at the HTML code hidden in the form to steal your email address, so using a form by itself isn’t always the safest route. Better yet, use a free Form Processor so that your email address is never even in the HTML coding on your pages.

The service I use is Bravenet’s Form processor (www.bravenet.com). You can see ours in action here: http://www.passionforbusiness.com/send-email.htm

5. Never buy anything that’s sent through a spam email. First, it just encourages them to continue to spam. Second, it tells them that your email address is accurate, and they can then sell that address to someone else.

6. Never reply to spam and ask to be unsubscribed. They’ll just ignore it anyway, and it tells them that your email address is accurate, which just keeps you on the list. Note: many legitimate emails newsletters and mailing lists use automated unsubscribe links at the bottom of their emails, and you CAN use these to get off of mailing lists.

7. Use anti-spam software, like Norton Internet Security, on your own PC to filter spam as it comes into your email system. You still receive the spam, but it gets filtered to a Junk Mail or Bulk Mail folder, and segregates the spam from the legitimate email. Most anti-spam filters need to be trained, however, so you’ll have to occasionally tell the filter that something is NOT spam that it inadvertently put into the Junk Mail folder. Many of these anti-spam filters work on the principle of White Lists (legitimate email addresses that you DO want to receive email from) and Black Lists (spammer email addresses that you do NOT want to receive email from). Learn how to train your anti-spam software and it will work wonders for you.

8. Check to see if your ISP or hosting company has anti- spam technology in place, to catch spam before it even hits your Inbox. Be careful, though, because sometimes these filters are over-zealous and you have to train it to accept emails from mailing lists that you have subscribed to.

9. Do not use a catch-all email address. A catch-all email address is set up if you have your own website, and it is intended to catch all of the incoming emails sent to your domain even if there is no legitimate mailbox by that name. For example, your email address might be mary@mydomain.com. If that mailbox is set up as a catch all, and someone sends an email to marie@mydomain.com (with a spelling mistake in the email name), it will be forwarded to mary@mydomain.com. However, spammers know about catch-all email addresses, and will take your domain name mydomain.com and add common prefixes to it, like info@ or admin@. If you have a catch- all, then those spamming emails will come to you, even if you don’t have a legitimate mailbox of info@mydomain.com or admin@mydomain.com set up with your hosting company. See how easy it is for spammers to get to you?

10. Finally, if spam is really bad, create a new personal email address for yourself, tell everyone about the new address (give them several reminders that you are changing email addresses), then delete the old personal email address. This may seem a little drastic, but if you receive 200 spam emails a day, it might be time to time this final step to eradicate it.

You are not powerless against spam. But you do have to take action to fight back. Don’t let them bully you into accepting hundreds of unwanted emails a day! Take action now to reclaim your Inbox!

I have been looking at the possibility of doing some Ebay trading. And, since I have been on the Internet for a while, I decided that I should see what Ebay scams, if any, was floating about. Why? It is always good to be aware of the good, the bad, and the ugly of any online venture. And since, I’ve seen all sides – it’s wise to have cautious optimism.

Wholesale List Scam

With this scam, the wholesaler gives you a photo of say, a computer monitor or DVD – the buyer is under the assumption that they are buying a monitor or DVD, right? Wrong? You may only be buying a wholesale list. This is what they call a “bait and switch”. They are hoping that the individual is in a hurry or cannot read English well, and they blindly buy. Rule of thumb: read
everything before buying.

Note: Wholesale List scams are very common for monitors, laptops, camcorders, DVD players, flat screen televisions and mp3 players; cutting-edge electronic devices.

Fake Money Order

The buyer sends the seller a fake money order, a bad check – and the seller sends the item before the money order or check has been successfully cashed. Seller is out the item and the money.

Credit Card Chargebacks

The buyer pays with a credit card through Paypal. Once the buyer has received the item, the buyer initiates a chargeback. This is where the novice come in, if you do not have proof that the item was sent – you are out the money, the item, and you have to pay a chargeback fee. Rule of thumb:
Send your item through UPS, or certified mail to protect yourself.

Fake Escrow Scam

The scammer says that they want to buy your item, but they want to use an escrow service. The purpose of the escrow service is to add a layer of protection for the buyer. They will hold on to the money, and once the buyer has received the item from the seller, the escrow service will release the money to the seller. This is where the scam comes in – The buyer will request that you use the escrow service that they, so they say, have used with other transactions. The escrow service is a front – set up by the buyer.

Email Ebay Scam
The email Ebay scam – is an email that says it has come from Ebay. The email will state that it looks like your account has been compromised and they would like your to verify the information, for your protection, of course. Never click the link. Open a new Internet session and manually type the information to get into your account.

Other email scams, include the fake payment received email. You will receive a payment-received notice, that looks authentic, but be aware, it could have been sent by the buyer. Never send anything, until you have verified that the payment has been received and the info received is valid.

To conclude, when you are looking at any new venture, it is always good to do the research and be aware of what you may be up against. It hard enough to start any business – and you definitely don’t want anyone running off with your hard earned money. Being aware – can keep your business moving forward.

The rewards of life come to those who do, not to those who
merely read, talk or day dream. Action is the key.

Okay I want you to answer this question:

“In December of last year did you achieve all you set out
to achieve in January of the same year?”

This is a ‘yes or no’ answer, so don’t spend too long
considering it.

The answer, of course, is ‘no’ – unless you are a
pathological liar!

Next question: “Did you set out to achieve anything last
year?”

Aha! Now that’s a more interesting question I think.

Deciding at the start of a year that you want to achieve a
certain result by the end of that year, is an example of
our old friend goal-setting.

High-performance people set goals. Winners set goals.
Losers never set goals. Why? Because it takes about 20
minutes of concentrated effort to write down your goals,
and losers have far more important things to do than this.
It interferes with valuable boozing time, for example. Such
a task would take up nearly a whole episode of a soap
opera. You could read a trash newspaper from cover to cover
in this time.

But there is a more important reason why many people don’t
write goals. It is this. Writing goals commits you to
action, otherwise there is little point in writing them.

Turning your dreams (goals) into reality will not happen
automatically. It will require work and effort.

“Ohmygod!!! WORK, and EFFORT??? Forget it man! I’m not
writing down anything on a piece of paper which will commit
me to that!”

This is why people do not set goals (write down their
dreams). They cannot bear to have that piece of paper
leering at them in silent accusation as the months tick by.

But what is at stake here? Nothing less than undreamed of
wealth, unlimited happiness, and a totally fulfilled life.
Perhaps more importantly, you can meet your fear head on
and live like a warrior, not a frightened rabbit.

The older I get the more I wonder what the hell we’re all
so afraid of. Like you, I travel the world and see or hear
about real problems; murder, torture, death, disease and
starvation. Then I return to this grey, stuffy country to
witness intelligent and privileged people wasting their
lives away down the pub or propped in front of the TV
screen for (on average) four hours each night! Unbelievable!

And these people are also timid beyond belief. They are
completely risk-averse and will run bleating to the
authorities if the tiniest upset ruffles the calm waters of
their uneventful lives. I am saying all this in the hope
that it will make you shudder. None of it applies to you,
of course.

Achieving great wealth and happiness starts with having a
dream. Today’s dreams are surely tomorrow’s realities. So
you blew it last year? You have a chance to redeem yourself
this year – if you have the guts of course.

Got any fight left in you, or have you thrown in the towel
long ago? Are you a shivering, frightened little mouse or a
human being prepared to fight and win? Are you going to
spend the rest of this year bleating and moaning about how
you cannot succeed? Or are you going to do something about
making your own success a reality?

Are you prepared to fight?

Did you know that there are folks out there who will SPAM thousands of Forums with information and links to your website for a fee? It is true and they come from Russia with Love. Russian SPAM Artists will charge $35.00 per thousand Forums and SPAM a message with links to websites for disreputable Internet companies.

How does this work? Well Joe Blow has a website and wants to get traffic, so he makes up a little message advertisement and this Russian con-artist Forum Spammer and criminal dzumon@altern.org , which the FTC refuses to enforce posts this message. This criminal claims;

“Opportunities of posting: Registration at a forum with editing a profile of the user. Dispatch on the forums supporting a guest input. Notices on e-mail about answers at a forum or private messages. The Opportunity of registration without posting (increases PR Google). On the ending of dispatch you receive the report on the done work – direct references to your announcement.”

So basically this guy goes in a lies to the Forum Administrator, signs up and then begins posting, eventually they are cut down and they come in under a new name. For those forums with no administrator and free login with password, they just keep spamming and ruining the forum. And the Federal Trade Commission will not do anything about it, because it is not within their definition? Silly government, graffiti is against the law, why won’t they do anything about this? Consider this in 2006.

Electronic publishing has ended up in the progressive growth of online libraries, consisting of research materials, on-line articles and literary works.

The rise of electronic publishing has introduced readers to fresh methods of looking at reading material. Once with the only real choice of reading material on a laptop monitor there now really exists a brilliant fast emerging market focused on tech linked with electronic content publishing. For example, inside its Aug 30, 2009 edition, Publisher’s Weekly reviewed a good many pieces of hardware specially made for reading digital copy. Despite being moderately new, this synthesis of devices and also the written word has only just started.

Electronic publishers offer up a very wide range of mags to an even wider spread of consumers. Alongside an unknown number of digital publications, the influence of this specific arena could be strong. Many epublishers, on-line merchants and additionally single wordsmiths have captured readers in niche markets who could be difficult to attain through traditional ways of magazine publishing as well as providing already established regular readers with the extra convenience of buying electronic titles on the internet for immediate download.

A number of individuals have aired their concerns that online publishing detracts value from both books and also reading. These opponents state that looking at digitized words with a screen cannot replace the pleasure that comes from pouring over copy as well as thinking about every flip of the page. Others might be less worried regarding the visceral act of reading a publication finding that they are more worried by the hurdles of hardware.

With significantly less overhead needed, far fewer squandered resources as well as no concerns about storing excess publications electronic publishing has proven to be an affordable different option to issuing printed material. Consumers benefit from less expensive reading material which can usually be accessed at their own convenience. In all likeliness digital publishing will not supplant printed content but in reality its persistent growth is clearly a continual balancing act. Digitised publishing will certainly continue to establish itself as the connection between the power of applied science and the power of the written word.

Title: How to tell if someone opens your HTML newsletter: The ants come marching 1×1 – Hurrah! Copyright Eric Koshinsky, 2003

There is no real way to know exactly how many times your newsletters are read. There is a neat little ‘trick’ you can use with HTML based newsletters and email so that you can know at least how many times it has been viewed. Compare the number of views the number of copies sent out and you will have a reasonably good idea of how well read your newsletter is. With HTML newsletters and email messages it is possible to tell if the message has been opened.

It all sounds reasonably simple, and actually it really is quite easy. All you need to do is: 1) create a simple 1×1 clear .gif image. 2) Upload the image to your webserver so it is on the internet. 3) Insert the image at the head of your newsletter/email. 4) Mail out your newsletter/email to your mailing list.

Now, when a reader opens your newsletter, the invisible image is loaded, your server’s webstats record the hit, and presto, you know how many times your newsletter has been opened.

In a bit more detail.

Create the 1×1.gif file. To do this, any basic image editor will do. Simply create a new .gif image that is 1 pixel X 1 pixel with a transparent background. Jasc software’s Paintshop pro is a great and cheap image editor for PC’s, and graphicConverter is a great one for Mac. Don’t worry, if this seems to be too much of a bother, you can you can simply download the image at the newbie-guides.com download directory. Simply search for ‘clear-image’. Save it in a place that is easy to remember. The 1×1 image is invisible when opened!

Upload the image to your webserver

Use whatever ftp (file transfer protocol) software you like and simply upload the file to your images directory. I normally make a special directory only for these images. This way my counter images are in a folder /images/counters/ to keep them seperate from the other images – it just helps keep things more managable.

Insert the image into your newsletter.

Please note that because many article publication newsletters do not allow HTML in the article text, I have placed the different elements on seperate lines. Simply make each HTML statement into a single line should you wish to use it.

This is quite straight forward. Just insert the HTML statement:

at the start of your newsletter, just after the tag.

Of course, if you are using some wysiwyg editor like FrontPage, be sure to insert the image from your webserver, and NOT from your local hard drive!!

Mail out your newsletter as usual.

It is important to keep in mind that you will need to give the my-1×1.gif file a different name every time you send out your newsletter. This way your webstats will track each newsletter seperately. For example if you send out your newsletter twice a month, you might name the counter images: JAN-counter-A.gif and JAN-counter-B.gif for each of the mailings. NOTE: Don’t delete the first one, simply copy it and give it a new name for the next mailing. That way the original image will keep recording hits for you!

So, simply duplicate the file, and then rename the file on your server as well as the HTML code in your newsletter. This means you will end up with something like this (inside the ‘images/counters’ directory on your webserver): JAN-counter-A.gif
JAN-counter-B.gif
FEB-counter-A.gif
FEB-counter-B.gif

In your newsletter the HTML code would be something like:

in your first January mailing and…

in your second January mailing..

If you are worried that all these images will consume all your webspace – DON’T. A typical 1×1.gif uses about 1k of diskspace. Not really something to be overly concerned about!!

Now what you will need to do is check your web server stats to see how many times your image has been ‘hit’. Every time an image is loaded through your webserver, it is recorded as a hit. Look to see how many times it has been ‘hit’ and you know how many times your newsletter has been read!

Just how do you check your webstats? Well I’ve written another article that explains webstats in more detail, but basically, your webhost package will provide you with all that stats, and a program that will analyze them for you. Two of the most common stat’s packages are awstats, and webalyzer. Any reputable webhost will have one (or both) of these installed as part of your hosting package. Simply log into your hosting administration account (which is also where you create email accounts etc.) and use the stat’s package they have installed.

You will be looking to find your 1×1.gif (whatever you named it). Every stats package displays information a little differently, so you will have to look a little to find your information. Most commonly you will look for something like:

-Top URL,
-Most Requested Files,
-File hits

Once you find the information, you can check it against your mail out numbers and have a much better idea of how well you are reaching your subscribers and clients.

If you are an astute reader, and I’m sure you are, you’ll already know that there are some problems with this technique. As with most things in life, it isn’t perfect. The chief problem is one that simply can’t be solved, by any technique! That problem is simply that just because your newsletter/email is opened doesn’t mean that the reader actually reads your newsletter very carefully – or at all! But then again, there is NO WAY to ensure that someone reads your newsletter – although having a totally skookum newsletter that people want to read certainly helps!

A second problem is that some people, very foolishly, have their email program’s ‘auto-preview’ window pane open all the time. This means that as soon as they click on a message (even if only to delete it), it is displayed at the bottom of their screen. This still records a ‘hit’ in your webstats, but may not have any real meaning. A ‘false-positive’ as they say.

The final dilemma is that this won’t work with text only email messages and newsletters. The whole concept depends on the image being ‘pulled’ from your webserver when someone opens the newsletter. This simply doesn’t happen with plain text newsletters. Sorry ’bout that!

There is no truly perfect way to know how many people are reading your newsletter as it is sent out. But using this very simple technique you can have a much better idea of how many are being at least opened (and hopefully read) as opposed to simply being deleted or filtered out as spam.

Remarkably careful notes released by the Bank of England very recently led without hesitation to the new UK Sterling bounce-back we have witnessed being stopped. The most recent resolution by the UK Central Bank was unanimous for interest rates to continue on hold and to uphold the existing degree of quantitative easing. In spite of this, rather surprisingly, the vocal members of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) believed Sterling’s new appreciation was not undeniably the ‘green shoot of recovery’ multifarious people are also predicting and also will probably in genuineness harm business and thus encumber the British economic recuperation.

These unpredicted comments saw the pound sterling drop down a cent against both the American Dollar and Euro and just over one cent and a half against the Swiss Franc. Current exchange rates may not be what you’d like but you may be compelled to exchange because of a holiday, etc.

Today, United Kingdom high street retail sales as well as public finance information might afford extra indications on the wellbeing of the UK economy and also could possibly initiate prolonged volatility in the money markets. So, make doubly certain you are in frequent and close contact with your foreign currency account manager so they could keep you knowledgeable of market activities.

Intelligence publicized yesterday by the Office of National Statistics or the ONS for short, confirmed that joblessness in the UK had risen significantly to more that 2.2 million the highest intensity since November 2006 Despite rise the figure was not as unfortunate as forecast conversely, with the national unemployment level still over 0.07 it was viewed as downbeat for the UK pound. This news, on top of the cautious remarks by the MPC merely went to inflate Sterling’s woes. David Kern, the chief economist employed at the British Chambers of Commerce, commented: “These jobless figures are slightly better than feared, but the overall situation remains grim… It is much too early to talk about the end of recession”

The fear at this point is that the previous data could degenerate as school as well as uni leavers go into the employment market at the most awful potential point which is likely to deposit farther load on the UK pound. Therefore, if you have an upcoming foreign currency exchange chat to a specialist money broker who can often be able to spell out every one of the alternatives put forward to you including fixing your money exchange rates for a specified period of time in the future for just a tiny deposit on a forward contract ideal to assist you budget.

We all know that the Killer Bees have already invaded the United States of America and have killed people, pets and animals by swarming them and stinging them to death. Bummer indeed and it is quite serious for many towns in many South Western Regions in the US. But can we stop these ferocious killer bee swarms?

Is there a way to prevent them from swarming? One researcher Mr. Warren Powers believes so and he stated his theory to stop them using high-powered sound waves. In an online think tank Mr. Powers stated:

“This is why I think sound energy has a chance to succeed in the task of weakening or possibly fracture of the “tightened-drum-head” features found within the wing, specifically the cellophane-like membranes stretched between the fibrous wing “spars” seen via the link above.”

But if it takes a lot of power why use sound waves? I understand that sound could be used, however what about the possibilities of microwave, laser and other types of waves? Because we know you can send microwaves and such to stop even humans. Testing has been done at Sandia Labs and I read something about a project in Alamogordo. Are you really wanting to use sound or do you care, because if something works better or with less energy or more efficient are you interested or do you wish to only stick to sound? Are you open to another means to the end?

Interesting question as the researchers and scientists work on ways to stop the killer bees from killing you and your family, as the quest continues. The Killer Bees are serious and they are tough little insects, which can really pack a wallop. So, consider this in 2006.
